This edition
of the Technology Corner looks at resources on the World Wide Web that the Baccalaureate Program Director may find helpful.
SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION
RESOURCES:
First, and foremost,
there is the BPD web site itself, with its many resources designed to assist new and experienced BPD’s to perform their
administrative roles. BPD’s web site is located at: http://www.bpdonline.org/ (accessed 1/27/08), and includes links to many helpful resources.
- There are links to National Directories of BSW and MSW programs on the home page of this site. .
- There is a link on the home page for BPD publications (http://www.bpdonline.org/site/indexer/35/content.htm (accessed 1/27/08). BPD’s publications include the
Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work, and a book on Directing the Baccalaureate Social Work Education Program.
- BPD Update Online, which you are reading now,
a publication dating back to the Winter of 2001, can be accessed through the BPD Web Site.
- The BPD listserv, which is also headquartered on the BPD web site, has over 1000 members. This free resource has a well deserved reputation as being an excellent source of
help for BPD’s and for baccalaureate social work educators. Members who
post inquiries there are likely to receive a number of helpful responses from others within a short period of time. Netiquette requires that they, in turn, summarize the responses they have received in a report back
to the Listserv.
- There are also links to many other informative web sites related to social work and social work education
on the BPD site.
The Council on Social Work
Education (CSWE) Web site is located at http://www.cswe.org/CSWE/ (accessed 1/27/08)
.
The Institute
for the Advancement of Social Work Research web site is at: http://iaswresearch.org/ (accessed 1/27/08). This Institute sponsors a free listserv that sends out weekly information to its members
about funding opportunities for social work programs and research, upcoming conferences, calls for presentations and publications,
and other valuable information. This is an excellent resource for BPD’s
in small programs, where there may not be ready access to information about funding opportunities.
The National
Association of Social Work (NASW) has its national site at: http://www.naswdc.org/ (accessed 1/27/08). The NASW Code of Ethics will be found at: http://www.naswdc.org/pubs/code/default.asp (accessed 1/27/08).
The National
Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work (NADD) has a web site at:
http://www.naddssw.org/ (accessed 1/27/08).
The Group for
the Advancement of Doctoral Education maintains a web site at: http://web.uconn.edu/gade/ (accessed 1/27/08).
This group specifically focuses on doctoral education in social work.
ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION RESOURCES
Some basic information and
definitions of key terms related to Academic Administration will be found in the Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_administration (accessed 1/27/08). The Wikipedia is the Internet’s encyclopedia, written by volunteers around the
world. Established in 2001, today it has approximately 75,000 contributors and
9,000.000 articles. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About, accessed 1/27/08).
Barnes and Noble, which operates
bookstores at many academic institutions, has a site web page that indexes books on academic administration. (http://browse.barnesandnoble.com/browse/nav.asp?bncatid=914347&visgrp=nonfiction&z=y, accessed 1/27/08)
Brown
University has a Handbook of Academic Administration on the web at: http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Dean_of_the_Faculty/handbook/index.html (accessed 1/27/08). Although much of the material there is specific to Brown, there are chapters on the
Duties of the Head of an Academic Unit, Supervision of Departmental Curriculum, Budgeting and Staffing, and other key administrative
issues.
Hopefully, this
list of resources will be a good starting point for Internet research on issues helpful to the new or experienced BPD!
